Take-home essay # 3
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Rough draft due:  Nov. 24th
Final draft due:  Dec. 8th

In this essay of 750-1000 words, you will examine social and/or political issues found within The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.  Once you decide on a specific topic, you will formulate a research question, develop a thesis statement, and conduct research for evidence in support of your thesis statement.  This evidence will be drawn from at least four different sources.  These sources must be:

1.     1 excerpt from The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
2.     1 book (print or ebook) accessed through CUNY +
3.     1 periodical (newspaper, journal, or magazine) accessed through Academic Search Complete or Lexis Nexis
4.     1 primary source

Your thesis statement (or answer to your research question) will be in response to a “Question of Fact,” “Question of Value,” or “Question of Policy.”  You need to provide at least three different reasons why you believe (or would like to prove) your thesis statement.

Ø  In the introduction, you will discuss the social or political topic you have chosen to research and explain its significance.  You will then state your thesis and the evidence that you intend to examine.

Ø  In the body of the essay, you will argue your thesis with evidentiary support (three reasons to support your belief using four different sources). Be sure to also include any counter-arguments that are being made.  Then, provide evidence that refutes these counter-arguments.

Ø  In the conclusion of the essay, you will compare and contrast how the issue is represented in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks versus how it is viewed or represented today.

Remember that when quoting or citing from your sources, you need to follow the MLA format.   You will also need to include a “Works Cited” of the sources you are using.
